Who can resist a BOGO sale? Even the name is catchy! 

Buy-one get-one is a proven sales tactic that can generate great results for your ecommerce store. This offer type is excellent for clearing out inventory and growing a repeat customer base. It creates the perception of an amazing, exclusive deal for your customer comparable to a 50% off everything sale. You can even control how many products are required to trigger a deal! 


Getting set up

Creating a BOGO deal in Ultimate Special Offers is easy!  You just name your offer, select the products that will trigger the BOGO deal (the “Buy X” part), and then choose the products that will be discounted (the “Get Y” part).  Then you set your discounts:

  • New price: Set a new price for the products in the offer. For example, customers can buy 2 products and get a third at a new price.  
  • Discount percentage: Set a percentage-based discount for the offer. As an example, customers can buy 2 products and get a third at 50% off.  
  • Discount amount: Set a dollar-based discount for the offer. For instance, customers can buy 2 products and get a third at $10 off.

Control trigger and discounted products

You can have granular control over your BOGO offer by selecting the products or collections which trigger the deal and then the discounted products and collections separately. This means you can select products from category A which need to be purchased at full price to get the products from category B with the discount.

Visibility and availability

Build urgency and draw attention to your sale using sales badges and create messaging to communicate the offer. Here’s how the discount will show throughout your site:

  • On the Collection page you will see both a banner at the top of the page and optional sales badges per product.
  • Similarly, on the Product page you will see the top banner and sales badge.
  • On the Cart page you will also see a banner to help encourage the additional purchase. 

If you would like to change the colors or appearance of the badges and banners, you can do that in the Appearance settings.

Tip: In the Availability section of the app admin, you can create a schedule for your offer. You can also choose who can take advantage of your offer by requiring customers to log in or creating custom links.

Testing the offer

Head to our BOGO Collection here! Add one product to the cart— this can be the same product or a mix and match. Once you get to the cart with one added, you will see a popup that offers 50% off your second item!


Tips for running a BOGO sale

Choose items that require re-purchase

Your customer is getting a free or deeply discounted item, which is great! But to really gain their loyalty and ongoing business you can offer products that require re-purchase like makeup, food or other single-use items. Look at these sales as an investment in your business’s future and a way to bring customers back to your store.

Select items that work together

You want to offer products that complement each other. For example, offering two pairs of winter boots in a BOGO may work, but you could be more successful offering the boots with laces or thick socks.

If you’re running a BOGO with snowshoes and beach towels, or pencils and computers, you might have a hard time getting traction. You want your sale to feel cohesive, and most importantly, to limit buyer hesitation.

Use high margin items

When you choose products with high profit margins, your sale will generate profit even when giving the customer a great deal.  Win-win for everyone!

Create urgency

We recommend running your BOGO offer in a timed window to create urgency with your customers.  You can also tap into features like popups and sale badges to further draw your customers’ attention to the deal.
